My husband was a fighter pilot No 3 Squadron. They were sent to France on May 10th when Belgium fell. He was killed three days later. He is buried in the War Cemetery at Armentieres, and it took me eleven years before I could bear the pilgrimage to his grave. How terrible is war. We all know that and [as] I stood there amongst all the hundreds of graves from the First World War that stretched around me like a white sea, I could only think, with such clarity, of the thousands of lives that had been affected – from this one cemetery alone…
